The Little Mermaid Wows Patrons
Barbados Today April 2018
Broadway show comes to Barbados
Added by Barbados Today on April 20, 2017.
Once
On This Island, an intriguing, romantic musical, heads to the Frank
Collymore Hall this weekend.
The
eight-time Tony-nominated, Olivier Award-winning production will feature an
entire local cast of 26 talented youth, who are part of Operation Triple Threat
(OTT).
Students
of the intensive performing arts programme will deliver the musical fable, set
on an island in the French Antilles on the night of a violent tropical storm. A
theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the fairy tale, The Little Mermaid,
the play’s vibrant music score is expected to resonate with Barbadian audiences
when it opens this Friday, April 21.
“Once
On This Island is a one-of-a-kind musical theatre production. It explores
the classic themes of love, loss and redemption in the context of Caribbean
culture, art, religion and social structure. It is our most ambitious and
anticipated production yet,” said Janelle Headley, Creative Director/Founder of
OTT, who also directs the show.
Once
On This Island was first presented Off-Broadway, where it opened to rave
reviews before moving to Broadway. Its book and lyrics are by Lynn Ahrens and
music by Stephen Flaherty. The production is being presented through special
arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
Besides
the opening night, the show will be staged on
Saturday, April 22, and Sunday, April 23. It is being presented with
support from The Maria Holder Memorial Trust, Frank Collymore Hall, Banks
Holdings Ltd., Rock Hard Cement, R.L. Mark & Company Ltd, Office Solutions
& Systems Barbados Ltd and Capital Media HD 99.3 FM.
It
follows previous successful productions from OTT, including Into The Woods,
The Wiz and 13, A New Musical.

Into The Woods!
Their production of Broadway
hit, Into The Woods, earned them rave reviews from the
patrons who came out to the Frank Collymore Hall last weekend.
The audience was kept on their
toes as they were taken on a journey of suspense, action, romance and comedy as
several classic fairytales came to life before their eyes – with a contemporary
twist.
The 28-member cast aged 11 – 21
sang, danced and acted in a polished production that upheld the quality set
design and costuming for which OTT has become known.
Anna Greenidge was formidable
in her portrayal of The Witch, who wielded her influence over The Baker and his
Wife and the many characters who crossed their paths – Cinderella, Little Red
Riding Hood, Jack the Giant Killer, Rapunzel and more. OTT newcomer,
Makéda Lowe, gave an engaging performance of Little Red Riding Hood, whose
character had a much more complicated journey than the fairytale ever let on.
OTT’s Into The
Woods was a quality
production by cast and crew that validated the programme’s stated mission, as
explained by Director and Founder, Janelle Headley: "Operation Thriple
Threat exists, first and foremost, because we believe that every young aspiring
artist deserve to be the best they can be."
The developmental
programme aims to help children to be able to fulfil their dreams regardless of
financial limitations.

Just like Dorothy in the tornado that whisked her off to Oz, patrons were blown away by the wonderful performances on the opening night of The Wiz.
The 1975 Broadway adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is being staged by local developmental performing arts programme, Operation Triple Threat (OTT), at Frank Collymore Hall this weekend. With ages ranging from 11 to 24, the cast members displayed an impressive level of talent, professionalism and polish as they sang, danced and acted – proving that they truly were a triple threat and fully deserving of the standing ovation they received at the end of the night.
Patrons who filled the Hall were captivated as they followed Dorothy (Melanie Jean-Baptiste) down the Yellow Brick Road to Emerald City to meet The Wiz.
Jean-Baptiste sparkled as brightly as her silver slippers, as she sang and acted her way into the audience’s heart.
Her travel companions, The Scarecrow (Jabari Browne), The Tin Man (Ammunikée Gomez) and The Cowardly Lion (Zoe Armstrong) were equally riveting and kept the audience laughing with their antics and mannerisms which brought their characters to life. The Wiz (Katani Lewis), the Wicked Witch of the West (Makala King) and the Good Witch of the South (Anna Greenidge) also commanded the stage, while the full supporting cast maintained the high standard of performance with choreographies that were well synchronized, athletic and acrobatic. The creative and well executed set design, costuming and makeup were all integral to the success of the production. While the transition between scenes could have been swifter, cast members never missed a cue or dropped character, even those who played multiple roles – an indication of their discipline and intense preparation under the direction of OTT Founder/Director Janelle Headley and tutors Tara-Jane Herbert, Justin Poleon and Maachelle Farley.
The Wiz continues tonight and tomorrow in already sold-out performances.

OTT is going to Broadway!! (Well...a few of us.)
Although we've had to cancel our summer programme this year;
due to a lack of funding. (Yes, we are still bummed about it....) We couldn't
let an entire summer go by without doing something! So
we decided that we'd use the small amount of money we did have to help four of
our most promising students take part in the 2013 Broadway Student Summit,
which is held in New York City. You might be asking, "Why only four?"
We absolutely wish we could take more students but that's all the summit could
accommodate right now. The summer session is sold out, but don't fear! We're
already looking at doing the trip again--maybe next Easter! For more
information about the programme visit:http://www.broadwaystudentsummit.com/.
Also check out "The Wall" on OTT's website for daily updates on the
trip, starting from July 10th through 15th.

From the hit motion pictures, television series, and international stage success, FAME is nothing short of a global phenomenon. Set during the last years of New York City’s celebrated High School for the Performing Arts on 46th Street (1980-1984), FAME JR. is the bittersweet but ultimately inspiring story of a diverse group of students as they commit to four years of grueling artistic and academic work.
